Sweet and Spicy Chinese Meatballs

Sweet and spicy pork meatballs

This is a really simple take on my low calorie pork meatballs and such a lovely treat.  It was a great cook and we both loved it. Simple and super tasty and sensible calories.

Ingredients for the meatballs

  • 500gm 5% pork mince
  • 1 tsp garlic granules
  • 1 tsp onion granules
  • 1 tbsp breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • half tsp salt
  • half tsp pepper
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 1tsp Chinese 5 spice (I only add this for this recipe)

Sweet and Spicy Sauce

  • 2 peppers I used red and yellow diced
  • Small onion diced
  • 2 cloves of garlic
  • 2″ piece of ginger finely chopped
  • 3 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 4 tbsp Hoisin sauce
  • 4 tbsp honey
  • 4 tbsp fresh orange juice
  • 3 tbsp Sriracha
  • 1 tsp chilli powder
  • half tsp Chinese 5 spice
  • 1 tbsp tomato puree

Method

Pre heat the BBQ  to around 180c

Combine all the meatball ingredients together and divide into small bite size meatballs. I normally get around 18 – 22 from this mix. Pop onto a baking sheet lined with baking paper or grease the tray and spray with oil. Pop into the bbq for around 20 minutes until cooked and starting to brown.

Whilst these are cooking pop the onions and peppers into a pan, I pop these in the bbq too but you could stove top this too (I just love doing it all in the shack) Once softened which is about 5-10 minutes add the rest of the ingredients and cook them for as long as the meatballs take. This should give you a nice thick glossy sauce. Once you there pop the meatballs into the sauce to cover and once completely covered they are ready to serve with some plain white rice. Absolute fakeaway perfection.

Tips.

We served ours with white rice but Chinese noodles would be great too.

If you cooked this or any of my recipes then please do let me know how it went, I would love some feedback.
